Agentic AI Adoption: Gartner Warns Vendors on Trust & Risk

Agentic AI, the next evolution of generative AI, is set to transform enterprise software. However, Gartner warns vendors that rushing to adopt without oversight could undermine trust and value. Unlike traditional AI assistants, agentic AI systems act autonomously—making decisions and executing tasks without constant prompts. Gartner predicts that by 2028, one-third of all generative AI interactions will involve such agents, reshaping product delivery, business models, and service design.

While the potential is significant, the risks are equally pronounced. Vendors are under pressure to add agentic AI features quickly, but Gartner emphasizes the need for discipline, transparency, and measurable outcomes. Key recommendations include:

  • Design for transparency and trust: Enterprises, especially in regulated industries, demand explainability and auditability. Agentic AI must include decision logs, reliability dashboards, and strict oversight to prevent black-box risks.
  • Validate use cases before scaling: Autonomy alone does not guarantee value. Vendors should test features in controlled environments and focus on high-impact workflows where measurable benefits—such as faster detection, reduced errors, or improved efficiency—are proven.
  • Model complexity and cost upfront: Agentic AI increases demands across UX, integration, and governance. Vendors must anticipate technical debt, build fault-tolerant systems, and align architectures with enterprise security and reliability standards.
  • Prepare services and teams: Adoption requires cross-functional alignment across IT, data, and business teams. Partnerships with hyperscalers and AI specialists, along with workforce training, will be critical for scaling responsibly.
  • Adapt pricing models: With no benchmarks yet, Gartner recommends outcome-based pricing tied to measurable impact, supported by modular and flexible billing structures.

Ultimately, Gartner stresses that agentic AI is not about hype but about building sustainable value. Vendors that lead with control, transparency, and validated outcomes will be better positioned to capture market share as enterprises shift toward autonomous AI adoption.
