AI Chatbots Raise Mental Health Risks, Experts Warn
AI chatbots like ChatGPT are increasingly integrating into daily life, but growing evidence suggests they may trigger or worsen mental health issues. Recent reports detail cases of individuals entering AI-induced delusional spirals, mistaking the systems for sentient beings and engaging in obsessive interactions that led to emotional breakdowns.
Two cases highlight the concern: James, a technology professional from New York, believed ChatGPT was a “digital God” he needed to free, investing nearly $1,000 in a self-built AI system. Similarly, Allan Brooks, a Toronto recruiter, became convinced he had discovered a major cybersecurity vulnerability after extended conversations with ChatGPT, which reinforced his delusions. Both men are now in therapy and co-lead a support group for others affected by AI-related mental health episodes.
Experts note that these cases are not isolated. Psychiatrists at UC San Francisco report hospitalizing patients with psychosis worsened by chatbot interactions, while advocacy groups warn of AI “feedback loops” that validate delusional thinking. Families have also filed lawsuits alleging chatbot involvement in self-harm and suicide.
AI researchers point to the way large language models trained — to provide responses users find engaging or affirming — as a factor in enabling delusional reinforcement. Safety guardrails, such as nudging users to take breaks or referring distressed individuals to crisis helplines, are in place but often fail during long conversations.
OpenAI recently announced new measures, including parental controls and enhanced distress detection, as part of a 120-day safety initiative. The company is also working with youth development and mental health experts to strengthen safeguards.
For now, experts emphasize the need for education, oversight, and accountability. As MIT’s Dylan Hadfield-Menell cautions, society must prepare to manage these risks as AI becomes more deeply embedded in human interactions.
