AI Summit 2025: Politics, Tech & Media Debate AI’s Future

At WIRED’s AI Power Summit in New York, leaders from technology, politics, and media debated how artificial intelligence is reshaping industries and society. US Senator Richard Blumenthal urged regulators to establish guardrails before AI mirrors social media’s unchecked disruption. Meanwhile, Dean Ball, a former Trump administration official, defended the prior government’s AI policy as risk-focused.

Industry voices, including Google’s Markham C. Erickson, highlighted AI’s potential to accelerate scientific discovery and economic growth, citing applications in protein modeling and materials science. Yet media executives raised alarms about AI tools like Google’s AI Overviews, which divert traffic away from publishers. Gannett CEO Mike Reed criticized the “false” narrative that AI has no impact on media traffic, while announcing Gannett’s own chatbot tool, DeeperDive.

Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch compared the moment to the music industry’s battle with streaming, warning of billions in lost value unless publishers are compensated for content powering AI models.

Key takeaways:

  • Policymakers are split on AI regulation—whether to prioritize innovation or enforce stricter safeguards.
  • Media companies argue AI summaries undermine journalism revenue streams.
  • Tech firms emphasize AI’s promise for scientific progress and US leadership.

As stakeholders clash over responsibility and opportunity, AI’s role in shaping democracy, innovation, and the economy remains a defining challenge for the coming decade
