AI Surge Accelerates Cloud Adoption—and Complexity
A recent Gartner report reveals that by 2029, AI workloads will drive over 50% of global cloud computing, up from under 10% today. This exponential growth signals a pressing need for enterprises to modernize their IT infrastructure to accommodate data-heavy AI and machine learning applications. However, Gartner warns that without strategic planning, many cloud implementations will fall short.
Key challenges include:
- Multi-cloud complexity: Over half of organizations expected to fail in realizing value from multi-cloud strategies by 2029.
- Infrastructure bottlenecks: AI acceleration requires more than just GPUs. Gartner’s Adrian Wong emphasizes the need to optimize storage, networking, and cooling systems to prevent “data starvation.”
- Skills shortage: A regional lack of AI talent in APAC is expected to hinder successful deployment and scaling of AI/ML solutions.
- Cloud dissatisfaction: By 2028, one in four organizations is likely to express dissatisfaction with their cloud outcomes, often due to rushed migrations and inadequate modernization strategies.
Wong notes that AI and sustainability goals can align, as hyperscale providers increasingly rely on renewable energy or renewable energy certificates (RECs). Many cloud providers also publish Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) metrics, typically ranging from 1.1 to 1.5, helping companies make energy-efficient deployment decisions.
Increased geopolitical tensions are also influencing cloud strategies. “Geopatriation”—moving workloads to sovereign or local providers— is becoming more common due to data localization laws and risk of trade sanctions. Wong cites the 2024 CrowdStrike outage as a critical lesson in planning for digital sovereignty.
To ensure successful AI integration and cloud outcomes, Gartner advises organizations to establish clear cloud strategies, align priorities with business objectives, and partner with cloud-managed service providers. As AI reshapes infrastructure needs, cloud readiness will become a defining competitive factor in digital transformation.
