Anthropic: AI Could Double US Economic Growth by 2035

A new economic analysis from Anthropic suggests that artificial intelligence could significantly reshape US productivity over the next 10 years, potentially doubling the economy’s annual growth rate. The study, published last week, reviewed 100,000 anonymized user interactions with Claude to measure how much faster workers completed tasks using the AI assistant.

Anthropic found that Claude reduced task completion times by an average of 80%, with a median savings of 84% across all job types. Using 2024 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, researchers estimated that these efficiency gains translate into a 1.8% annual boost in US labor productivity, almost double the nation’s historical productivity growth rate.

The study highlights notable differences in time savings across professions. Highest productivity gains:

  • Software developers: 19% contribution to total productivity lift
  • General and operations managers: 6%
  • Marketing and market research analysts: 5%
  • Customer service representatives: 4%
  • Secondary school teachers: 3%

Industries such as management, education, and construction saw the largest per-task time reductions, while sales, office support, and personal care roles saw more modest improvements. For example, financial analysts earning roughly $58 per hour saved about $43 per task when using Claude for economic analysis—an 80% reduction in working time.

Anthropic emphasized several caveats. The estimates assume today’s AI capabilities remain constant over the next decade, despite rapid advancements in multi-step reasoning, agentic automation, and tool-use features. The analysis also draws exclusively from Claude conversations, which may overrepresent tasks well-suited to that model, and does not account for additional human oversight such as fact-checking AI outputs.

Still, the study provides one of the first large-scale quantitative assessments of AI’s macroeconomic impact. Anthropic frames the findings as a baseline for future research as AI models become more capable and increasingly embedded across white-collar workflows.
