Anthropic CEO: AI Advancing Fast, Job Loss Risks Ahead

Artificial intelligence could soon trigger widespread unemployment, according to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who reiterated concerns that the technology is evolving at an unprecedented pace. Speaking at Axios’ AI+ DC Summit, Amodei said AI is already replacing jobs, underscoring the need for urgent policy and business discussions on its labor market impact.

The warning comes amid a cooling U.S. job market. Unemployment has risen to a three-year high, and job growth is slowing compared to recent years. While it remains unclear how much of this trend is directly attributable to AI, Amodei argued the trajectory is undeniable. “This is already happening,” he stated.

Amodei has previously forecast that AI could eliminate up to half of entry-level white-collar jobs and drive unemployment as high as 20% within the next one to five years. At the summit, he emphasized the uncertainty around exact timelines but stressed that exponential advances mean the shift could happen faster than many anticipate.

Key points from Amodei’s remarks include:

  • Rapid progress: AI is moving faster than public perception, with current systems already reshaping workflows and entry-level tasks.
  • Uncertain outcomes: Job displacement could occur sooner or later than expected, but the probability is high enough to warrant serious attention.
  • Policy response: Amodei suggested government intervention may be needed, potentially including new taxes on AI companies to support workers adapting to the disruption.

Amodei’s comments reflect a broader industry debate. While some critics argue his warnings bolster Anthropic’s reputation as a “responsible” AI developer, he countered that skepticism underestimates the speed of change. “We’re talking about today’s AI,” he said. “The technology is moving quickly.”

The remarks highlight the tension between AI’s promise and its risks, as businesses, regulators, and workers prepare for a future that may arrive sooner than expected.
