ChatGPT Diminishes Idea Diversity in Brainstorming, Study Finds

A new academic study has raised concerns about the use of AI tools, such as ChatGPT, in brainstorming settings—particularly within group environments. According to the research, individuals who used AI assistance during brainstorming produced ideas that were less diverse compared to those who brainstormed without it. 

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports, explored how participants generated product ideas under different conditions: with AI support, without AI, and in group settings. While AI tools increased productivity and helped participants generate more ideas in a shorter time, the ideas tended to converge toward common themes or typical responses—diminishing novelty and creativity. 

The findings suggest that while AI can boost efficiency, its use may inadvertently homogenize creative outputs. This phenomenon arises because generative AI trained to produce statistically probable responses based on patterns in large datasets, often repeating similar ideas that align with majority preferences or existing content. 

Importantly, the study highlights a trade-off: using AI in early-stage ideation may speed up brainstorming and reduce cognitive load, but it also risks limiting the range of perspectives considered. This could be particularly problematic for teams seeking groundbreaking or unconventional innovations. Researchers recommend that organizations and product teams carefully evaluate when and how to use AI in collaborative processes, especially in creativity-dependent contexts. 

As businesses increasingly adopt AI tools to enhance workflow efficiency, the study serves as a timely reminder that over-reliance on generative AI could constrain original thinking.
