Trump Launches Genesis Mission to Boost AI Science Research

The White House has launched the Genesis Mission, a new executive-order program that brings together the Department of Energy (DoE), major tech companies, and academic institutions to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence in scientific research. The initiative marks a central pillar of President Donald Trump’s second-term AI agenda, following the broader AI Action Plan unveiled in July.

The program directs the DoE to build a federal AI platform trained on decades of national-laboratory data, enabling collaboration across government, academia, and industry. The platform is expected to support AI-driven breakthroughs in areas including biotechnology, materials science, quantum information, nuclear energy, space exploration, and semiconductor research.

DoE Secretary Chris Wright said the initiative aims to redirect the private sector’s progress in commercial AI toward scientific discovery, while also tackling rising energy costs tied to AI infrastructure. Data centers powering AI services could consume 6.7% to 12% of U.S. electricity by 2028, up from 4.4% in 2023, according to DoE estimates. Wright said AI-enhanced grid analytics could help reverse electricity price increases and modernize aging infrastructure.

The Genesis Mission also expands public-private partnerships already underway. Nvidia, Oracle, and Dell are working with national labs to build next-generation supercomputers optimized for scientific workloads. The program is designed to accelerate similar collaborations across fields.

However, the effort comes as concerns grow about AI reliability, including hallucinations in scientific applications, and the broader energy burden of AI model training. It also coincides with Trump’s controversial push to block state-level AI regulation, sparking criticism from lawmakers and safety advocates concerned about weakened oversight.

Despite regulatory tensions, the Genesis Mission reflects the administration’s strategy to preserve U.S. leadership amid intensifying AI competition with China, especially after Chinese firm DeepSeek’s R1 model disrupted global markets earlier this year.
